Final image & Evaluation questions

Evaluation questions

1. Is your finished poster different to your original ideas?

Yes, my original concept was to have a close up shot of an eye and have that bruised but then I changed my mind as I thought showing more of the ‘victims’ face would seem to get the message out clearer and it grabs your attention better.

2. Does the advert communicate its message effectively? How?

Seeing as the style of bullying I was given as a task was physical bullying then yes, it visually shows the harm that can be done to a person and it also hints towards the emotional side of bullying as well, this makes the poster very alarming.

3. Are you pleased with how the poster looks?

Yes, I am pleased with how my poster looks because the effects I have used in the picture are fairly believable and it grabs the readers attention really well. I also like how the writing stands out against the image which is what I intended on doing.

4. Describe what you learnt about both Photoshop (mention specific tools) and advertising techniques whilst producing the poster.

Having used photoshop beforehand I was already familiar with the basic concept of it, but what I have learnt with it is how to create new layers, how to use the burn tool, how to use the quick selection tool, and
how to use the ‘soft light’ brush effect to create realistic looking bruising a blood effects.

Finished poster & Production

Once I had my picture ready I had to try my best to manipulate it in photoshop and change an almost makeup free face into a beaten up face.

Below is the picture I took before any editing was done to it (the only makeup used was a bit of eye liner to create a black eye);

The first edit I made to the picture was a swolen eye and to create this effect I selected the clone stamp, selected liquify under the filter tab and then in the liquify window selected the bloat tool. With this tool I gently brushed the edges of the eye to create a slowlen look.

Below is a screenshot of me creating a swolen eye  in the liquify window;

The next edit I made to the picture was bruising around the eye and on the cheek bone, to achieve this effect selected the brush tool, clicked on layers and in the drop down menu selected the ‘soft light’ effect.

Below is a screenshot of me creating bruising around the eye with the soft light effect;

Another edit I made to the image was adding blood dripping from the nose, to get this effect I selected the brush tool, clicked on the brush panel tab and then chose a soft brush.

Below is a screenshot of that process;

The last edit I made to the image was darkening the edges and to get this effect I used the burn tool, set the exposure to 50% and burnt the edges lightly.

Below is a screenshot of that process;

and this is the finished version with added text;

My chosen picture

The reason why I chose my picture is because it’s a close up of the victims face which is where all the distracting elements take place such as bruising and any other injuries or emotions.
I also chose to use my picture because of it’s simplicity, there’s nothing else going on in the picture to distract the viewer from the subject.
The other 3 pictures are not appropriate for my idea’s because they are harder to distinguish key points that portray physical bullying like bruising, cuts etc..
The other images also make it hard to display emotions because they don’t highlight the face so well which is where you distinguish emotions, although you can distinguish emotions
through body language.

Bullying Brainstorm

My task is to create a poster for an anti-bullying campaign and the theme my poster is based around is physical bullying.

I intend to get a close up of a bruised eye (centered) surrounded by darkness with bold font above and below the eye that stands out.

The eye in my poster will tell people to be alert and be aware of bullying.
